Care that honours who you are

Cultural Responsiveness

Alberta is home to families from every corner of the world — including many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit communities. We believe great care starts with understanding your language, your traditions, your values. Every caregiver receives ongoing cultural competency training so your family feels seen, heard, and respected.

Culturally responsive family care
Our Philosophy

Great care starts with understanding

We believe every person deserves to be treated with dignity, respect, and cultural understanding. Care isn't one-size-fits-all — it's deeply personal. When we understand your language, your traditions, and what matters most to your family, we can provide support that truly makes a difference.

This isn't just a policy — it's woven into everything we do. From how we hire and train our team to how we design care plans, cultural responsiveness is at the heart of 1ARC Family Care.

What this means in practice

Care that reflects who you are

Cultural responsiveness isn't abstract — it shows up in everyday moments. Here's how we bring it to life.

Language Matters

Our multilingual team includes caregivers who speak the languages Alberta families speak at home — reducing barriers and building trust from the first conversation.

Faith-Aware Care

We respect and accommodate religious practices, dietary observances, prayer schedules, and faith-based traditions as part of everyday care.

Family-Centred Approach

We engage the whole family — parents, grandparents, elders, and extended kin — because we know family structures and decision-making vary across cultures.

Ongoing Training

Every caregiver receives continuous cultural competency education, including anti-racism training, cultural humility, and trauma-informed practice.

Open Communication

We create space for feedback, questions, and conversation. If something doesn't feel right, we want to hear it — and we'll adapt.

Celebrating Diversity

We don't just accommodate difference — we celebrate it. Your culture, traditions, and identity are strengths we honour.

Indigenous care support for First Nations, Métis and Inuit families
Indigenous Care

Honouring First Nations, Métis & Inuit families

Many of the families we serve across Alberta are First Nations, Métis, and Inuit — and Indigenous children are disproportionately represented in the child welfare system. We don't just acknowledge this reality — we build our care around it. Our team is trained to understand the historical and ongoing impacts of colonization, residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the child welfare system on Indigenous families.

Trauma-Informed, Culturally Safe Care
Every caregiver receives training on the history and ongoing impacts of colonialism on Indigenous families, and how to provide care that is culturally safe, not just culturally aware.
Community & Kinship Connections
We respect and support connections to community, extended family, Elders, and culture. We understand that care happens within a broader web of relationships and traditions.
Ceremony & Cultural Practice
We honour the role of ceremony, language, and cultural practice in healing and wellbeing — and we make space for these in our care approach.
Respectful, Relationship-Based Support
We approach every family with humility, patience, and respect — building trust through consistency, listening, and care that honours each family's story.

Our Commitments

The promises we keep

01

We'll match you with caregivers who understand your background.

Wherever possible, we pair families with caregivers who share or deeply understand their cultural context, language, and traditions.

02

We'll adapt our care to your values — not the other way around.

Dietary preferences, modesty considerations, prayer times, gender preferences for care — these aren't special requests. They're standard practice.

03

We'll never stop learning.

Cultural competency isn't a checkbox. Our team engages in continuous education, reflection, and growth to serve every family better.

04

We'll honour Indigenous ways of knowing and being.

We respect that care, healing, and family look different across cultures. We make space for ceremony, language, community, and traditional practices.

05

We'll listen first, act second.

Every family's story is different. Before we propose a care plan, we take time to understand who you are and what matters to you.
